Research shows that divorce can be especially stressful for men

On Behalf of | Dec 26, 2019 | Divorce

Getting divorced in Texas can have many negative outcomes for all parties involved. However, research shows that it can be particularly challenging for men. Here is a look at why divorce can quickly take a toll on men.

For starters, about two-thirds of men depend on their spouses for their main social support. In light of this, getting divorced immensely increases men’s feelings of isolation. Unfortunately, men who are socially isolated have more than an 80% greater chance of passing away due to heart disease.

In addition, many men struggle to share their divorce-related emotional pain, worries and failures with others. They, therefore, struggle privately with low self-esteem and a lack of confidence. As a result, men’s risk of experiencing depression, helplessness and stress increases. In fact, a study showed that men who are divorced have a nine-times-higher chance of dying by suicide.

The reality is, however, that divorce can take a financial and an emotional toll on both men and women in Texas. This is true no matter how short or long of a time two people were married. However, if two divorcing spouses are able to resolve their divorce matters outside of court — for example, through mediation or negotiation — this may make the divorce process less stressful for them when compared with going to divorce trial. In addition, they may feel more empowered and more in control of the marital breakup process. An attorney can provide the direction needed to pursue a comprehensive and fair settlement during a divorce proceeding in the Lone Star State.
