The holidays can bring an added level of stress to Texas couples’ lives, due to increased travel, family obligations and financial pressures. However, could these aspects of the holidays result in more divorce filings? A researcher sought to see whether there was any causality between the two.
The researcher analyzed out-of-state divorce filing that occurred between 2001 and 2015. It was discovered that there were consistently more divorces in March and August. The reason for the increase around those two times of the year could still be tied to the holidays, the researcher said.
That is, for many couples, the holidays present an opportunity to test out the relationship one last time. However, when the reconciliation doesn’t occur, married couples may take a few months to prepare their families and organize their finances before they officially file. The data suggests that there might exist a key delay between when the couple first experiences trouble and the time when separation or divorce officially occurs.
