Post-holidays equals divorce season? Researchers think so

There are usually three main reasons that many formerly married couples in Texas say they decided to call it quits. These may include the impression that they had no more excitement in their relationship, there were financial problems or they were unable to resolve their conflicts. Researchers now believe they have stumbled across a pattern that may also speak to why -- and even when -- couples decide to call it quits and file for divorce.

In the out-of-state study, researchers believe they discovered a seasonal pattern to divorce filings. The researchers said that this is one of the first instances of proving quantitatively that such a pattern exists. The researchers analyzed data for divorce filings from 2001 to 2015 and surmised that there are consistent peaks in the months of both March and August.

Their main theory is that couples file for divorce during these months as they follow winter and summer holidays, respectively. Many individuals view holidays with an anticipation for new beginnings, something different and a new transition. They may get their hopes up that the holidays will help their marriages. However, when that doesn't happen and their hopes are dashed, the individuals will question whether or not their marriages have any more value.

No matter the time of year a divorce occurs, the process may be emotionally, physically and mentally draining. However, it is important to remember that individuals are in a relatively vulnerable position, and it's essential to protect one's self and one's rights as well as one's children and personal finances. An experienced Texas divorce attorney is typically consulted to ensure that this protection occurs and the client's rights are upheld to the fullest extent of the law.
